Is this the local concert flyer of the year?

Where.the.wild.things.are

Maybe not ... but then again, it does have a lot going for it. Hand-drawn, intricate, timely, clever and even a little bit historic, as it represents the first-ever live music at the new St. Pete bar called Fubar.

Fubar, if you'll recall, is the bar that took the place of the late Uptown Bar on Central Avenue. Uptown wasn't quite as good a live music venue as its neighbor up the block, the Emerald, but it held its own, with quality punk concerts every now and then.

As for the music on Friday's bill, listed on the flyer above? It's a lot of gutteral, high-energy punk, in the style of Against Me! Local fans might recognize Tampa punk bands Avast! and Rest of Us, and possibly even Spring Hill's Nothing in the Dark. Spanish Gamble is a gutteral Gainesville punk outfit right out of the No Idea Records mold (although technically, they're signed to Paper + Plastick, the label owned by Less Than Jake drummer -- and co-founder of Fueled By Ramen -- Vinnie Fiorello).

But let's get back to that flyer. Designed by St. Pete artist/promoter Chewy, creator of many fun pen-drawn show flyers over the years -- we're especially partial to this one -- it's a rather exquisite tribute to the art of Maurice Sendak, right down to the delicately rendered leaves on the trees. The Wild Thing noshing on a six-string with his teeth is a nice touch.

So while the rest of America is off watching Spike Jonze's big-screen adaptation of the beloved kids' book, know that somewhere on Central Avenue, a group of young punks are paying tribute in their own way. The concert begins at 10 p.m. at Fubar, 658 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Tickets are $2. 21 and up.

Let the wild rumpus start!
