Mayor proclaims 'Damon Fowler Day' in Key West

Brandon-born singer, songwriter and guitar hero Damon Fowler has been performing with his ace roots-rock trio at the Green Parrot in Key West for nearly a decade.

The place has been around since 1890, and in 2000 Playboy magazine named it one of the best bars in America. For Fowler, the Green Parrot ranks up there with Skipper‚Äôs Smokehouse in Tampa and Ringside Caf?© in St. Petersburg as one of his all-time favorite venues.

Last Friday, Fowler took the stage at Green Parrot, excited to perform for the always wonderfully rowdy crowd. Right before he began to play, though, Key West Mayor Morgan McPherson stepped up to the mic to make an announcement.

"I had no clue what he was going to say," Fowler said when he called this afternoon from his home near Brandon. "He starts reading off this plaque and it all ties to my record (Sugar Shack). The next thing I know, he says, ‘I hereby declare this day, June 5, 2009, Damon Fowler Day.’ I couldn’t believe it!"

Fowler quickly snapped a picture of the certificate — which is framed and features a golden seal along with the mayor’s signature — to friends and family. "My mom flipped out," Fowler said.

You can watch a video of the presentation here. (That's where we got the admittedly grainy still image, above.)
