Modern English's Robbie Grey talks 'I Melt With You,' 'Valley Girl' and spring break in Florida

You may not know the name Robbie Grey, but you probably know the lyrics to his signature tune: I’ll stop the world and melt with you. You’ve seen the difference and it’s getting better all the time. There’s nothing you and I won’t do. I’ll stop the world and melt with you.

It’s the song that launched a thousand mix tapes. Not to mention TV commercials for cheeseburgers, tacos and chocolate bars. I Melt With You by Modern English was a Top 10 hit in 1983, thanks to heavy MTV play and its prominent inclusion in the ’80s teen flick Valley Girl, starring a then-unknown Nicolas Cage.

"We got sent this film and we sat down one night after a concert and watched it," Grey said recently. "They used (the song) like three times, and one time all the way through. We’ve recorded a new version of I Melt With You for a Mark Pellington movie, which funny enough is called I Melt With You. It’s really kind of a dark film. It’s coming out in November, I think, in the States.

The recently reunited Modern English will perform a free show at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Venue, 2675 Ulmerton Road, Clearwater. Click here for details.
