The night the Jonas Brothers bombed in Ybor City

The Jonas Brothers may or may not be the biggest band in the world. They're certainly bound to drive the girly-girls wild when they come to the St. Pete Times Forum Tuesday night.

But there was a time when the JoBros weren't all that hot.

Back in September 2006, before a hitmaking performance at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Nick, Joe and Kevin came to the Orpheum, a tiny club in Ybor City, for a show, and drew only about 65 paying customers.

Performancewise, they were growing, said promoter Dave Hundley of No Clubs Productions. The fans who were there seemed to enjoy it, but not enough of them showed up. Organizers lost about $1,000 on the night, Hundley said.

Check out the utterly surreal clip above, shot by a prescient fan. It's chock-full of surreal goodness. The Jonas Brothers, hanging out by the merch table? Joe Jonas mugging for a night-vision camera by whispering, "I see dead people"? And sweet little 14-year-old Nicky Jonas, adopting a streetwise cadence to announce he's "just chillin' at the signing table"? Surreal.

You know what's funny? A similar scenario is playing itself out right now in St. Pete. Mitchell Musso, a.k.a. Oliver Oken from Hannah Montana, is coming to the State Theatre on Sept. 20, but Hundley, who's also promoting that show, says ticket sales have so far been slow.

If Smokin' Oken becomes the next Nick Jonas, you'll wish you were there. Just like you wish you were there at the Orpheum in 2006.
