Pauly Shore: Weaseling his way back to the top

Pauly Shore turned 42 on Monday, but he’s in no hurry to grow up.

The comedian and former MTV host was celebrated in the ’90s for his over-the-top persona in the comedies Encino Man, Son-in-Law, Jury Duty and Bio-Dome. Then Shore fell off the public’s radar, producing and starring in smaller projects like the 2009 Showtime special Pauly Shore and Friends. The roster included Shore’s dad, stand-up comedian Sammy Shore. (His mother is Mitzi Shore, founder of the famed Comedy Store nightclub in Los Angeles.)

"John Travolta once told me, 'If they took movies away from Robin Williams, would he stop being Robin Williams?' And the answer is no," Shore said last week. "So just ’cause I don’t have a big fat studio movie camera in front of my face doesn’t mean I have stopped being me. I’m still doing the same thing. I’m just doing it at a smaller level."

Shore performs this weekend at the Improv in Ybor City. Shows are 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday. $25. Click here for details.

Last week, the young-at-heart Shore called tbt* from the Comedy Store to discuss everything from going AWOL in Hollywood to the Mons Venus.
