Pick your Zappa: Dweezil at the Ritz, or Bogus Pomp at the State Theatre?

There's no such thing as a "fan" of Frank Zappa's music. There are only cultlike obsessives, wide-eyed apostles who believe the avant-garde jazzsmith made the ONLY music worth listening to, and if you can't understand that, then you should go back to trying to figure out how to eat and breathe without drooling, THAT IS WHAT AN UNCULTURED MORON YOU ARE.

This being the case, Zappa fanatics should be happy about the next few months. Two shows promise to bring Zappa's music to life in Tampa Bay -- one, a concert that's a longtime area tradition; the other, a gig by a son trying to cash in on his father's famous name.

As they do every year, St. Pete Zappa tribute act Bogus Pomp, above, will perform their traditional "Zappaween" Halloween show on Oct. 31 at the State Theatre in St. Pete. Tickets are $20. I've never been, but I hear it's something to see -- Bogus Pomp has performed with symphonies and original Zappa collaborators, and they've even toured Germany. But Halloween is their night to shine. Should be another wild show.

Meanwhile, in January, Dweezil Zappa will come to the Ritz Ybor for "Zappa Plays Zappa." The gig is at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 9, and tickets are $26-$28, $44 for VIP. Reviews for Dweezil's orchestral tribute to his father have been mostly positive. Variety called it "admirable" with many touching moments, while the New York Times said his guitar work was "duly impressive."

However, Tampa Bay could be a tough sell for Dweezil -- after all, we've had Bogus Pomp playing here for a decade and a half. Have they set the bar too high for Dweezil to match?

Yo, Zappa fans: If you could only see one of these two shows, which would it be?
