Raul Malo out, Bob Schneider, Rachel Goodrich in at 2010 Tropical Heatwave
When we told you that Mavericks singer Raul Malo would be headlining this year's Tropical Heatwave concert on May 15, our esteemed colleague Sean Daly perked up, calling Malo "just about the best singer in the world."
Too bad we won't get to hear him. Malo has dropped off the bill for this year's Heatwave, according to WMNF's Web site.
Ultimately, WMNF and Malo couldn't make the financials work. But the station remains a fan of Malo's hallowed pipes. "We hope to get him for another event later," program director Randy Wynne said in an e-mail.
Taking Malo's place on the bill are a couple of familiar names. Austin singer-songwriter Bob Schneider, above, known for semi-hits Round and Round, Metal & Steel and The World Exploded Into Love, will fill in as a Heatwave headliner. Acclaimed Miami folk-jazz-popsmith Rachel Goodrich is now listed on the bill, as is Grammy-nominated polka performer Alex Meixner.
A bunch of solid local performers have also been added to the bill, including GreyMarket, Johnny Cakes and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypso, Peter Baldwin Band, Dynasty, Jim Morey Band and Unkempt.
Tropical Heatwave is set for May 15 on eight stages in and around the Cuban Club in Ybor City. Tickets are $32-$40. Click here for all the details.
