Review: Eric Church brings underground attitude to Ribfest in St. Petersburg

It was business as usual at this year's Ribfest -- meaning classic rock was the star of the show at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg.

But on Sunday, a hot new country artist took the stage: Eric Church. The man behind Hell on the Heart and Smoke a Little Smoke headlined the barbecue festival's final night, giving country fans something to scream about.

Luke Preston from our sister publication, tb-two*, was at the show, and he writes that Church proved he has the swagger to become a major country star:

Church has a prolific catalog of songs, a captivating stage presence and, despite a lack of radio airtime, a rabid fan base, thousands of whom watched in awe Sunday night. Church and his more heavy metal than honky-tonk band energized 16 songs, never once letting up in their pursuit of entertaining the crowd. ... Church exhibits a passion for creating and performing honest music, something that has been missing in a lot of country music lately.
