Review: Jay Sean sizzles, Joe Jonas fizzles at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater
At a much-hyped concert Oct. 1 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, reviewer George Kielty from our sister publication, tb-two*, didn't immediately expect much from co-headliner Jay Sean. But he came away a fan:
Jay interacted with the crowd, getting them to clap, scream back to him and so on. He and his sidekick MC, MC Zani, engaged in multiple back and forth beat-box matches. A cappella versions of A Milli and Pa Pa Americano were great successes. He found the perfect balance between sex icon and “appropriate for all ages.” Genuinely a great performer, he’s someone I would choose to see again.
Then Joe Jonas, above, took the stage. JoBro fanatics may want to avert their eyes, but George writes:
Unfortunately, most of Jonas’ show was only about his love of himself. He didn’t interact with fans much, other than to ask if they wanted to stay up with him that night, or if anybody wanted him. I’m sorry, but you were aware that most of this audience was 12, right Joe? Throwing roses into the crowd was a smooth touch, I’ll give you that, but you can’t have the sex appeal and the Disney factor at the same time. It just doesn’t work.
The same, he writes, could have been said for the opening act, JoJo.
