Review / photos: Flo Rida, DJ Jazzy Jeff bring the party to the Venue in Clearwater
DJ Jazzy Jeff performed on Friday to a nearly sold-out crowd. The Venue tweeted that they were at 2500-plus in attendance, not nearly as packed as DJ Pauly D in my opinion, but still very packed. I would say there were about 100 more people for DJ Pauly D when he came a few months ago.
Nevertheless, DJ Jazzy Jeff had the crowd rockin to his '90s throwback set. Unlike many other performers I have photographed, DJ Jazzy Jeff appeared on stage at the time he was supposed to go on, which was 1 a.m. He came along with rapper Skillz, who was sort of the MC of the show and kept the crowd dancing while Jazzy Jeff remained behind the turntables. Skillz is famous for his year-end wrap-up songs about the year's news in the hip-hop world.
Flo Rida performed Saturday at the Venue to a smaller crowd, which seemed in my estimation to be about 1,500 people, maybe less. I knew it was a small crowd when I was able to find a great front-row parking spot at midnight. I also noticed no line to get in as I walked to the doors, which was not the case Friday for DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Flo Rida, too, was supposed to go on at 1 a.m., but was about 20 minutes late, which is pretty much on time for rappers, so the crowd didn't sweat it. Flo Rida put on a great high-energy show which involved champagne, shots, T-shirt giveaways, roses to the ladies and even jumping on the shoulders of his bodyguard and walking around the crowd!
The night ended when he tossed his expensive-looking Michael Jordan sneakers out into the crowd. Pretty crazy, but expected for a guy like Flo Rida!
