Review / photos: Three 6 Mafia party till the lights come on at the Kennedy in Tampa
The Kennedy in South Tampa hosted rap group Three 6 Mafia on Friday and I really didn't know what to expect. Were the Oscar winners going to be late? Would they be covered with security guards blocking our shots? Were us photographers going to be kicked out after the first three songs?
Nope! None of that happened.
I was told that they don't like to hang out at a club before their performance, which is what a lot of rappers do. They were scheduled to hit the stage at 1:30 a.m. and actually were only 10 minutes late! That was the first thing that blew my mind.
What really surprised me was when DJ Paul walked in along with Juicy J and DJ Smallz through the back door ... with no security or 13-man entourage! Most rappers roll deep, but not Three 6 Mafia -- they were cool and calm as they hit the stage.
They performed to a packed crowd at the Kennedy, and for most of their show, they were flanked with ladies from the crowd. After singing their last song they said they didn't want to get off the stage. They said they gonna stay a bit longer because Tampa was showing them so much love.
So the DJ just kept playing non-Three 6 Mafia songs and the crowd just went crazy. They stayed until the lights on the club came on, which was pretty awesome and the crowd loved it.
I spotted Bucs QB Josh Freeman hanging out at the club. I didn't see him actually hang with Three 6 Mafia, but lots of Bucs fans were showing him love in the VIP. He was very nice and posed for a photo outside of the Kennedy with promoter Johnny Pease.
