Review: REO Speedwagon rocks the Trop to kick off Rays Summer Concert Series

The 2011 Rays Summer Concert Series kicked off Saturday with a show by '80s radio-rock heroes REO Speedwagon, and most of the crowd who came to see the Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels was there.

Also in the crowd: Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, and Steve Spears of Stuck in the '80s, who writes:

I've been to enough REO shows to know they've slowed down their songs by a half-beat or so. It works great for tunes like Take It On The Run, giving it an "up yours!" feeling instead of the "eeyore" version that is featured in the studio recording. It doesn't work as well on tunes like Tough Guys and Don't Let Him Go. And Son of a Poor Man has become a set regular in recent years, a nod to their early years. It feels as pure as it did decades ago.
