Scion Rock Fest 2012 coming to Tampa; Down, Sleep, Sick Of It All among headliners

Tampa has long been considered a cradle of death metal, with hometown ties to groups like Obituary, Morbid Angel, Deicide and Cannibal Corpse. So when automaker/music incubator Scion was searching for cities to host its fourth annual Scion Rock Fest, Tampa must have been a no-brainer.

The Scion Rock Fest 2012 will take place on June 2 at four venues around Ybor City -- The Ritz Ybor, Orpheum, Crowbar and Czar. Twenty-six metal, punk and hardcore bands are on the bill so far, including Down (above), Sleep, Sick Of It All, Saint Vitus, Witch Mountain, Exodus, Cerebral Ballzy, Revocation and more.

The best part? The entire festival is free -- but you do need to RSVP, which you can do here starting at noon Friday. There will also be an option for local ticket pickup at area record stores, though the details aren't set yet. Expect the number of tickets to be more or less capped at the capacity of all four venues. Who's playing where (and at what time) isn't set yet, although we are told the two biggest names, Down and Sleep, will both be at the Ritz Ybor.
