Shaquille O'Neal's All-Star Comedy Jam coming to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater
Some of you may recognize Shaquille O'Neal from his work on the basketball court. Others may recognize him from his fine work on the films Blue Chips and Kazaam. A few of you Soundcheck readers may even fondly recall his timeless work with the Fu-Schnickens.
As the world breathes a sigh of relief that there actually may be no Shaquille O'Neal sex tape, we pass along news that the recently retired man-mountain is launching his own All-Star Comedy Jam Tour. And according to various websites, the tour will stop at Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall on Sept. 10. Tickets will cost $39.50-$49.50, and will go onsale Friday. Click here.
Now, this isn't as crazy an idea as it probably sounds. Shaq is one of the funniest athletes alive, and he's firmly established his "Comedy Jam" brand at NBA All-Star Weekends and through a series of roasts and hit DVDs. Comics like Cedric the Entertainer, Kevin Hart and D.L. Hughley have all been part of it.
Beyond that, though, details about the Clearwater event are a little squishy. Aside from tour host DeRay Davis, it's not clear who will actually be on this tour -- Shaq included. We can also deduce, for example, that Hughley won't be there -- he's booked in Pittsburgh that night.
The official tour announcement mentiones artists like Aries Spears, Tommy Davidson, Corey Holcomb, Gary Owen, Tony Roberts and Capone, but doesn't say who will be where. Even purported "tour host" Davis is booked elsewhere that weekend, according to his website. (***UPDATE***: Complicating matters even more is the fact that Davis, Spears and Owen are all booked at the Tampa Improv between now and the end of August. This makes things even MORE confusing.)
Just like Shaq vs. Rik Smits in the 2000 NBA Finals ... we'll keep you posted.
