Skrillex to score soundtrack to 'Spring Breakers' movie shot in Tampa Bay

It's been a while since we've had an update on Spring Breakers, the Harmony Korine movie that was shot earlier this year in St. Pete Beach and other local sites. The Tampa Bay shoots have long since wrapped, so we assumed this was the last we'd hear about the film for a while.

But then we see this: The film's score will be composed by none other than dubstep titan Skrillex.

The DJ/producer, who rose from the digital underground to become a darling at this year's Grammys and is now headlining festivals worldwide, is writing "menacing pads, stabs, and beats" for the film, according to the A.V. Club. He's collaborating with Cliff Martinez, who composed the memorable score to Drive.

"I think this film is going to turn a lot of heads in many ways. It was a lot of fun to work with Harmony because he gave me the freedom and trust to do whatever I wanted," Skrillex said in a statement, according to Rolling Stone. "Scoring to film is definitely a different approach to music making in the sense that it's not so much about how the music sounds by itself as it is finding ways to compliment the vibe of the film."

In a way, the man known as Sonny Moore is coming full circle with the Spring Breakers score -- after all, he did get his start in the Tampa-based hardcore band From First To Last.

It's just the latest musical connection to a movie that, for whatever reason, is full of them. It stars several musical actresses -- Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Heather Morris (Glee) and Selena Gomez, who of course dates Justin Bieber, who famously hung out with her in St. Petersburg during filming. Rapper Gucci Mane has a role in the film, too. And James Franco also stars as a rapper named "Alien," and c'mon, it's only a matter of time before he puts out a actual album someday anyway. Maybe even with Skrillex.
