Sleepy Vikings plan farewell (for now) shows as drummer departs for New York

Bad news for fans of one of Tampa Bay's brightest indie bands: Sleepy Vikings are going away.

But only for a bit. And only as you know them.

The group -- veterans of South By Southwest, recipients of national acclaim and one of tbt*'s 2012 Ultimate Local Artists -- is planning a going-away party for drummer Ryann Slauson, who is moving to New York for art and graduate school, studying sculpture. The show is at 9 p.m. Saturday at New World Brewery with Spies on Bikes and Sleepy Eye Giant. Tickets are $8, and Slauson will be selling her art on site to pay for travel and lodging. After that, the band's current lineup has one show left, at the Antiwarpt Festival on July 28. Click here for info on that.

The band is quick to note that Sleepy Vikings are not breaking up, which is good -- they'll be auditioning drummers this summer. (In fact, they already have one show lined up on Aug. 25 at New World Brewery. But losing Slauson is a tough blow, as she's contributed mightily to the band's sound and appeal. "I'm pretty sure the sound will change a lot," said guitarist Julian Conner.
