Slightly Stoopid is in Tampa Sunday. Did anyone else know this?
We would be lying if we called ourselves fans of SoCal stoner-reggae-rock band Slightly Stoopid, as you might recall if you read this review. Still, we hate not knowing when a major artist is coming to town, and dang if Slightly Stoopid didn't pull a fast one on us with a free concert this weekend at the University of Tampa.
The band is performing a free show at noon Sunday in Plant Park at the University of Tampa. The catch? The show is only open to University of Tampa students. Boooo! (Wait, what are we saying? We hate Slightly Stoopid. In that case, yaaaay!)
This is UT's annual Spring Concert -- last year they booked Gym Class Heroes, and they tried to slip it right past us then, too. Sunday's show is free to all UT students with a valid ID. If you're desperate, maybe you can hear the music from the downtown Tampa riverfront.
Let's hope this show goes better than Slightly Stoopid's recent campus concert in Gainesville, which was shut down by the cops after only six songs when the crowd of 12,000 couldn't be controlled. Massive, insane amounts of pot will do that to you, as you know if you've ever seen Reefer Madness.
One interesting footnote about this show: Local rock-reggae group 20/20 Boulevard won a battle of the bands to open for Slightly Stoopid, which is cool. But this presents a problem for singer Gordon Bonnett, who's got a great set of pipes. He's also scheduled to perform in Bernstein/Sondheim musical Candide at 2 p.m. Sunday in the David Falk Theatre at UT. When's the last time someone did Sondheim and Slightly Stoopid in the same day? We're guessing never.
If you feel left out because you won't get to see Slightly Stoopid this weekend, fear not -- they're coming to Orlando's Hard Rock Live on Aug. 20, co-headlining a tour with Cypress Hill. Crazy. Insane. Got no brain.
