SoundBytes: The Aquabats, Backstreet Boys, The Absence and more

-- Coming to the State Theatre on May 8: The Aquabats, above. Just look at those guys, and tell us you don't think that will be a fun show. Tickets are $19.50. Click here for details.

-- Backstreet's back, all right! The Backstreet Boys are performing at Hard Rock Live in Orlando on June 1. There will be screams ... oh yes, there will be screams. Bummed they're not coming to Tampa? Stay tuned, we hear there might be a Tampa Bay show in the works ...

-- No official word on a tour by Tampa metal faves The Absence just yet, but it looks like there might be a show booked for May 8 at Crowbar. Watch for them to play some new music.

-- Big Brother auditions are April 3 in Tampa. St. Pete's own Big Brother contestant, Casey Turner, a.k.a. DJ Mingle Mixx, shares some tips on the process here.

-- Big ups to the boys of Johnny Cakes and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypso -- the Tampa ska dudes are performing at SunFest 2010 in West Palm Beach, on the same bill as Five for Fighting, Flogging Molly, Big D and the Kids Table and more. Their show is at 4 p.m. May 2 (click here for a full schedule). "We submitted through Sonicbids and then I got a phone call from them a few weeks ago," said head Johnny Cake Mike Middlebrooks. "After a couple of conversations they booked us because they were into the steel drum and tropical punk sound." Well done!

-- Look out for a new artsy hub in St. Pete, as the "600 Block" prepares for a grand opening ceremony at 10 a.m. April 6.

-- Nice story here about 15 years of live music in Ybor City.
