SoundBytes: Common, The Devil Wears Prada, Acquire the Fire,
-- The last time we saw Common, he was performing at Mirage, a now-defunct club in Tampa. This fall, he'll return in an entirely different capacity: As a guest lecturer at the University of South Florida. Common has been added to USF's University Lecture Series on Sept. 26. And he's not the only hip-hop expert coming to USF this year: Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, the author of Beats, Rhymes, and Classroom Life: Hip-‐Hop Pedagogy and the Politics of Identity will speak on Jan. 19. Admission to both lectures is free. Click here for the details.
-- We should note here that Common and Hill aren't the biggest names on this fall's University Lecture Series slate. That would be Lara Logan, the CBS News correspondent who was brutally sexually assaulted while on assignment in Egypt. She'll speak at the college on Nov. 17. Other speakers include cast members of the VH1 bucket-list show The Buried Life on April 17.
-- Two of the artists we picked as must-see Warped Tour acts this year are touring together this fall -- and they'll be hitting the Ritz Ybor on Dec. 2. The Devil Wears Prada and Enter Shikari will perform with Whitechapel and For Today at the Ritz.
-- The annual Christian music festival known as Acquire the Fire will return to the USF Sun Dome on April 20-21, 2012. Tenth Avenue North, Shonlock, We Are Leo and John Gray are on the bill. Click here for a few meager details.
-- Get ready for even more of the Seminole Hard Rock: On Thursday, the hotel and casino will announce a $75 million expansion, bringing its total square footage to 220,000, making it "one of the largest casinos in the United States." One can only assume this will mean even more big concerts at the Hard Rock Cafe.
