South by Southwest 2010: No BAAMO show, but Tampa's still representing

As always, Tampa Bay is sending its fair share of bands to this year's South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. But one of the biggest stories is who isn't going.

The Bay Area Arts and Music Organization, which traditionally hosts its "Florida Bandango" concert in Austin with artists like Rebekah Pulley and Ronny Elliott, is not making the trek for the first time in eight years -- a victim, it would seem, of the tough economy.

But BAAMO does have a good rundown of some of this year's Tampa-centric SXSW action. Some of the highlights:

-- New Granada Showcase: Tampa's New Granada Records makes the pilgrimage to South by Southwest each year, but this year, it's an official label showcase, which is great exposure for the bands on the bill: King of Spain, Rec Center, Zillionaire (above), the Tenant, New Roman Times and Jen Wood. They're all performing March 20 at the Ghost Room, if you're gonna be in Austin. (New Granada is also co-hosting some unofficial parties on March 19 and 20, with additional bands including Red Room Cinema and Casper and the Cookies. Click here for the details.

-- Nervous Turkey: This epic live blues trio will be performing at an official showcase March 17 at the Cedar Door, alongside a handful of bands from all over the world, including Canja Rave from Brazil, Hystoic Vein from Japan, the Experimental Tropic Blues Band from Belgium and Berri Txarrak from Spain. Show 'em how we do it here in the U. S. of A., boys!

-- The Beauvilles: Shawn Kyle and company played a raucous show last year at South by Southwest, which led to gigs at Austin City Limits and the CMJ Music Marathon. Despite this review from an Austin writer, they were invited back to SXSW for an official showcase. They'll play March 17 at Barbarella, alongside Lucy and the Popsonics from Brazil, Descartes a Kant from Mexico and the Right Ons from Spain.

-- Tides of Man: The polymorphic rockers will perform March 18 at Emo's Jr., alongside DD/MM/YYYY and Maps and Atlases.

-- Tampa Bay's biggest americana-punk blog is hosting its own South By Southwest party with bands from around the country, like American Aquarium, Joe Pug and Kasey Anderson. And don't forget to check out the site's special South By Southwest podcast.

Other Florida bands on various bills at South by Southwest include Surfer Blood and Torche. Who else is gonna be there? Let us know in the comments.
