St. Pete teen band Next Exit reaches semifinals of national song contest

It seems like the teen sensations of Next Exit have been up to quite a bit since we named them Artist of the Day back in October.

The band of local middle and high school students from St. Petersburg are semifinalists in USAA’s Garage Band Playoff 2009, taken straight from the song they entered in the contest.

The grand prize in the Garage Band Playoff is a professional video and photo shoot, an in-depth interview for a podcast, tons of free buzz and $2,500.

Their song, Runnin’, ran them right into the semifinals, raking in almost 28,000 votes from listeners online. Voting in the semifinals is taking place now, with the winner announced Friday.

The grand prize would offer the band publicity and money, though they haven’t decided exactly how they would spend it.

“We’d save it and put it toward something the whole band can benefit from,” singer Mia Hartley said.
