'Sugar Man' Rodriguez coming to the Straz Center in Tampa
With Oscar season heating up, here's a cool spring show to look forward to: Rodriguez is coming to the Straz Center.
Y'know, Rodriguez. The Detroit folk singer-songwriter who barely made a blip in America before becoming a cult music superstar in South Africa. His story formed the basis of the acclaimed documentary Searching for Sugar Man, which is nominated for Best Documentary at this month's Academy Awards.
As also happened with Anvil, interest in Rodriguez has surged thanks to the success of Searching for Sugar Man. He's touring again, and has gigs planned at Coachella and the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona. The 70-year-old musician is even thinking of recording a new album, his first in 40 years.
Rodgriguez will come to Ferguson Hall of the Straz Center on May 9. (But you might see him before then, as many pundits think Searching for Sugar Man is the doc to beat at this year's Oscars.) Tickets are $35.50, and they'll go on sale at noon Friday. Click here for details.
