System of a Down's Serj Tankian coming to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg

Today we're happy to announce we have another candidate for Soundcheck's coveted WTF Concert of the Year Award.

Serj Tankian, the animated, operatic Armenian-American metal singer best known as the frontman for L.A. prog-metal agitators System of a Down, is coming to the Mahaffey Theater on Oct. 7. Tickets go onsale at noon July 10.

This show is definitely WTF-worthy, but unlike Hot Lips Houlihan at a Star Trek convention, it's a concert we would actually pay to see, because System of a Down is a great band, and Tankian has a hell of a voice.

Still, Serj Tankian at the Mahaffey? Really? To put this concert into perspective, Tankian's performance will come two days before the Florida Orchestra performs selections from Respighi, Beckel and Liszt in their first Mahaffey gig of the 2010-11 season. Maybe now they'll try to work in Chop Suey, too.

Serj and the Florida Orchestra aren't as far apart as you might think, though. Tankian has been performing with an outfit called the Elect the Dead Symphony, which serves up a creepy mix of electronic and orchestral rock that sounds more like an opera or a musical than a metal show. Check out this clip of Serj and his Symphony performing Empty Walls with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Mark this down as another wild 'n' crazy October show in Tampa Bay. And, as of today, it's in the running for this year's Soundcheck WTF Concert of the Year.
