Talkin' baseball with 3 Doors Down's Brad Arnold

The Tampa Bay Rays went undefeated last year when hosting a post-game concert at Tropicana Field. Will the streak be intact Saturday when 3 Doors Down takes the stage in centerfield?

The band plays shortly after the conclusion of the Rays-Twins game on Saturday. The concert is free to those attending the game. Game time is 4:10 p.m. and tickets start at $10 at

The Mississippi-bred rockers — powered by radio-friendly hits like Kryptonite, Loser and When I’m Gone — have played a bunch of unique gigs over the past decade, including George W. Bush’s inauguration party. But with the home team struggling in the AL East, this show is far more important ... at least to baseball fans.

Lead singer Brad Arnold was happy to alleviate our collective anxiety in an e-mail interview.

You know, the Rays have never lost on a night when they’ve had a post-game concert. Are you feeling the pressure? You don’t want to start the Kryptonite Curse on us, do you?

I’m thinking we’re going to have a good postgame victory concert for you guys. We love Tampa and we’re looking forward to rockin’ with you all.

Is it tough being a “conservative” band in the days of President Obama? Or is that an unfair label?

To me, it’s not tough at all. I think our country is going through a rough economic time right now. But I think we all need to have faith in our leaders, and in ourselves, and we’ll be just fine.

Off the stage, 3 Doors Down does a lot of good with your Better Life Foundation. Any special plans for that cause this year?

We hope to top the $250,000 we raised last year — all through the generosity of our fans. We’re in the process right now of purchasing six very special children’s cancer treatment beds that are built from actual NASCAR parts. Each bed has a fun NASCAR game that kids play sitting inside the car as they receive their treatment.

In the past, the foundation has mainly focused on the Gulf Coast. This year, we are expanding our efforts by sending these beds to the entire Southeast region. As we plan this December’s annual benefit concert, we’re proud to have the Mississippi National Guard sponsoring the event again this year. We hope to raise a lot of money for those in need and have a lot of fun in the process.
