Tampa bands hit South by Southwest
Today's Artist of the Day, Matt Hires, is headlining a solo acoustic showcase at the South by Southwest Music Conference on Saturday. But he isn’t the only Tampa Bay artist performing at this year’s South by Southwest. Here are two other notable shows going on in Austin:
BAAMO Florida Bandango: For the seventh year, the Bay Area Arts and Music Organization will stage their annual Florida showcase Wednesday at Yard Dog Folk Art Gallery in Austin. Making the trip from Tampa this year are blues vet Ronny Elliott, folk-rock favorite Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets (that's Elliott and Pulley above, performing at SXSW 2008); acclaimed Bradenton alt-country foursome Have Gun, Will Travel; former St. Pete resident Exene Cervenka, who sang for punk legends X; alt-rockers the Beauvilles (who are also headlining their own show after midnight Saturday at the Wave Rooftop); Southern rock stomers the Mojo Gurus; and blues heroes the Damon Fowler Group, who just released their national debut album, Sugar Shack.
New Granada Records “No-fficial” Showcase: Austin rockers New Roman Times are signed to Tampa label New Granada Records, so it was a nice gesture on their part to host a New Granada showcase at 3 p.m. Saturday. A handful of Tampa indie faves will play: Jangly popsters Zillionaire; experimental singer-songwriter King of Spain (a.k.a. Matt Slate); Americana folksters Rec Center; and popular ’90s holdovers Hankshaw, who returned to Tampa stages last year. Wish you could be there? Fear not: This same lineup (minus New Roman Times) is reuniting to perform May 8 at New World Brewery in Tampa.
