Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center gets a clunky new name
Look: It's not like " Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center" was ever anything but a mouthful to say. But the venue's announcement Monday that it's changing its name to (deep breath) " The David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts" is, at least on the surface, an aesthetic downgrade.
The name is going from nine syllables (already a mouthful) to 12. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, in other words. It sounds like a place that Garrison Keillor would play, sure -- but Mariah Carey, above (in 2003)? Does "The David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts" sound like the sort of place Mariah Carey would hang out?
We always used to pronounce the Performing Arts Center "T-PAC" for short. It was catchy, even though it left out the letter "B," but whatever. What are we supposed to call this place now? "The Straz?" Actually, that sounds pretty cool. Let's go with The Straz.
R. Kelly plays The Straz on Nov. 29.
Bill Maher's at The Straz on Dec. 3.
Duncan Sheik hits The Straz on March 26.
Yeah, the more we hear it, the more we're starting to like it. Bully for The Straz!
