Tampa's Nervous Turkey call it quits ... for now
Nervous Turkey, a wildly popular blues, rock and punk band out of Tampa led by the mojo-overflowing Ernie Locke, has ceased to be as we know it.
But have they broken up? (Breathe...) No.
“We decided to part ways with our drummer,” Locke said. “Aaron (Fowler) and I didn’t get along. When we do find a drummer, we’ll be playing under a new name.”
Known for talented musicianship, Locke’s insane belly gyrations and Waitsian swagger, Nervous Turkey was a 2010 tbt* Ultimate Local Artist, and they won a 2009 Best of the Bay award (Best Frontman) from Creative Loafing. Locke is also noteworthy in the music scene as the owner of the popular Ella’s Americana Folk Art Cafe in Seminole Heights.
In a March interview, Locke characterized Fowler’s contribution as strictly business. He described keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Mark Cunningham as a more heart-and-soul contributor to the band.
“I’m going to focus on the restaurant for a while,” Locke said Friday. “We’ll be looking for a new drummer in about a month and a half.”
