Tampa's Poetry 'n Lotion, Sleepy Vikings, Rebekah Pulley and more heading to South by Southwest
It's March, and you know what that means: A handful of local artists are packing up for the road trip from Tampa to Austin, Texas, for the South by Southwest music conference, which runs March 11-20.
If you're heading to Austin, here are some Tampa and Florida performances to keep an eye on.
New Granada Showcase
As always, one of the top Florida-centric shows at South by Southwest will be the showcase set by Tampa's New Granada Records. Tampa artists King of Spain and Sleepy Vikings (above)are among those on the bill for New Granada's March 19 show, along with Orlando's The Pauses, Jacksonville's Sunbears!, Austin's New Roman Times and Athens, Ga.'s Venice Is Sinking. Click here for details on the show. (Notably, New Granada released a free 12-song mp3 sampler that was featured on SXSW.com this week. It's well worth the download. Click here to get it.)
After taking a year off in 2010, SWSW's other big Tampa Bay event (which is not an official SXSW showcase, but still) is back in 2011. The Bay Area Arts and Music Organization will host a backyard party with Cuban bread, alligator chili and more. It's March 16 at the Yard Dog in Austin, and it features Sleepy Vikings, as well as Poetry 'n Lotion, Ronny Elliott, The Human Condition, Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets, Have Gun, Will Travel and the Beauvilles, plus special guests. Poetry 'n Lotion
The Tampa funk fusionists have also been accepted for a feature showcase at SXSW, and are scheduled to perform March 16 at Stephen F.'s Bar in Austin. They just need your help getting there. So over the next week, they're throwing three "SXSW Gas Money" shows around Tampa. All are free, but donations are welcome: Saturday (3/5) at Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe (with Ernie Locke); March 9 at The Hub; and March 10 at Stoney's Lounge (with Florida Night Heat). Hit 'em up on Facebook for the details. (They're also performing Saturday at Skipper's Smokehouse, opening for Hoots & Hellmouth; click here for details.
The Tampa rock-soul-punk outfit starring Juliet Simms is performing March 19. Interesting choice for an indie festival, considering they were also part of last summer's Warped Tour, but the more the merrier, we suppose. Click here for details.
Dominique Young Unique
The young hip hop phenom keeps stirring up attention online from publications like Spin, Pitchfork and NME. Every single feature refers to her as a "Tampa rapper," which is entirely true, but we have yet to see Young Unique perform a single show in her hometown. She's performing two shows in Austin, on March 15 and March 19. Expect a crush of attention; at last year's South by Southwest, she was interviewed by Stereogum and others. She could still be the next big star to emerge from Florida, but we'd like to see her perform closer to home for once.
NineBullets SXSW Day Parties
Bryan Childs of St. Petersburg operates the well-read alt-country-leaning blog NineBullets.net, and hosts a show on WMNF-88.5. He's pulled together two pretty great days' worth of shows on March 18 and 19, featuring one local band (Have Gun, Will Travel) and a bunch of really good national artists: Caitlin Rose, Kasey Anderson, American Aquarium, Two Cow Garage and more. Click here for details on both shows.
Know of any other Tampa Bay bands performing in Austin during South by Southwest? Fil us in on the details in the comments. We'll update this list up until SXSW.
