Thanks a lot, rain: Largo fails in bid for Guinness 'Twist' record

Despite the best efforts of the City of Largo and Joey "Peppermint Twist" Dee, it looks like the city of Largo won't be heading to the Guinness Book of World Records anytime soon.

The city's July 4 attempt to score the Guinness record for most people gathered to dance The Twist in one spot fell far short of expectations due to the rainy weather that plagued the Bay on the Fourth of July. Only about 600 people showed up, which is nowhere close to the record of 1,691 -- and a group in New Jersey is planning to put that record out of reach during a celebration this fall.

“They might break it in October," said Charla Lucas, Largo’s special events coordinator, "but we’ll have to definitely go for it again and go over their number."
