Time to sign up for the Ritz Ybor's Ultimate Opening Act contest
Band battles are a dime a dozen these days, and all too often, the winning artist doesn't get much out of it. That wasn't the case last year when the Ritz Ybor staged a huge battle of the bands featuring local artists covering well-known pop stars of the '80s. The winner, Mighty Mongo, above, got to open for Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime. They were also one of tbt*'s 2011 Ultimate Local Artists. COINCIDENCE?!?! We'll never tell.
Point is, the Ritz is about to launch its second "Quest for the Ultimate Opening Act," a monthlong contest pitting bands against each other for the chance to open for a national act, as well as $500 cash, a paid gig at an upcoming Square One event, and recording time at Atomic Audio. The runner-up will also get a Square One gig and $250.
Five different bands will participate each Wednesday night from July 13 to Aug. 3. A panel of judges will pick a winner each night, with the finals scheduled for Aug. 19. (Keep your eyes peeled for a Soundcheck correspondent on the panel.) The contest was a fun time last year, with each band covering artists like Madonna, George Michael and Prince.
Local bands have until Friday, July 1, to sign up. Click here for all the details.
