Top comics coming to Treasure Island in deal with Gotham Comedy Club

Music promoter Bill Edwards helped resurrect Jannus Landing. And he's promised to turn The Club at Treasure Island into a top-notch entertainment venue, too.

Now a new partnership with a renowned New York comedy club could help Edwards make an even bigger splash in the area.

The Club at Treasure Island on Monday announced a deal with New York's Gotham Comedy Club to bring more New York comics to Treasure Island on the second Friday of every month. The first three acts have been announced: Tom Papa (host of NBC's The Marriage Ref) on April 8, Colin Quinn (above) on May 13, and Dom Irrera on June 10.

These shows will be produced by Gotham, and members of The Club will receive "VIP access" should they ever visit the real Gotham Comedy Club in New York. "By affiliating ourselves with Gotham, the premier brand in comedy," Edwards said in a statement, "our venue now has special access to the top comedians anywhere."

That last part may be up for debate, although Papa, Quinn and Irrera are certainly well-respected comics. Regardless, if The Club plans to bring in acts of this caliber every single month -- not to mention previously announced shows by Robert Klein and Wayne Brady in the coming weeks -- then it suddenly becomes one of the top comedy destinations in Tampa Bay, right up there with the Improv, Side Splitters and special event venues like the Straz Center or Ruth Eckerd Hall.

And for comedy fans in Pinellas County, especially out near the beaches, this has to be great news. Readers, we ask you: How excited are you by the possibility of a new, high-profile "comedy club" in Treasure Island?
