Tropical Heatwave 2010: Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, Ruthie Foster, Raul Malo lead diverse lineup
You can tell you're looking at the new lineup for a Tropical Heatwave concert just by reading the descriptions of the music each band plays: "gypsy swing" ... "one man punk rock band" ... "thirteen-piece salsa and merengue" ... "fun(ny), retro vaudevillian duo" ... "hip hop."
Wait a minute. Hip hop? At Tropical Heatwave?
Yes, much of the 2010 Tropical Heatwave lineup has been announced, and in addition to your usual roots, blues and jam subjects -- piano boogieman Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, folk singer Ruthie Foster, Raul Malo of the Mavericks -- it looks like Tampa rapper BC is on the bill, giving Heatwave some much needed musical diversity.
Indeed, there are a lot of fresh faces on this year's Heatwave bill. Minnessota's Black Blondie offer up spacey alternative soul. Atlanta's Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics will appeal to all the Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones fans in the house. Nashville punks the Ettes bring a White Stripes-y edge to the bill. And Alabama funk-jam-electronic duo BoomBox will probably bring a serious dance part to one of the smaller venues around the Cuban Club.
If you want to preview some of the acts who will be there, you'll have several opportunities to do so. Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights are playing next Wednesday at New World Brewery. The Soulphonics will be at the Social in Orlando on Feb. 26. And then there are all the locals on this year's bill: In addition to BC, you've got Sons of Hippies, Have Gun, Will Travel, Sleepy Vikings, the Semis, the Hip Abduction and the Chicken Chasers.
This year's Tropical Heatwave will take place May 15, on seven stages in and around the Cuban Club in Ybor City. Tickets are $32 in advance or $40 at the door. For tickets and details see here.
