UPDATE: Maxwell, Jill Scott coming to the St. Pete Times Forum
According to his Web site, Maxwell is coming to the St. Pete Times Forum on June 15. Jill Scott is on board as the opener. Ticket info hasn't been announced, but tickets are scheduled to go onsale April 10.
UPDATE: Tickets will be priced at $39.75, $49.75, $79.75, $95.75 and $165.75. They go onsale at 10 a.m. April 9. We now return to your regularly scheduled post.
We have to give this show our highest recommendation. When we saw Maxwell at Ruth Eckerd Hall last July, the show blew our minds:
Vocally, he's not showy like Stevie, but soulful like Marvin and steamy like Prince. "I'll give you a sharp, I'll give you a flat," he said at one point, "but I'll never give you a lip-synch." He should be selling out arenas year-round, and he most definitely should not wait another eight years before releasing a follow-up to BLACKsummers'night. ...
Maxwell's signature version of the Kate Bush song This Woman's Work was the single best performance of any one song I've seen all summer. Backed by a piano, his chill-inducing falsetto was simple but show-stopping, and the audience sang like a choir behind him.
The fact that he's bringing Jill Scott is even more of a bonus. In addition to being an awesome singer, she's one of the stars of this weekend's new Tyler Perry movie, Why Did I Get Married, Too? Plus her HBO series, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, just won a Peabody Award.
Seriously: DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW. Maxwell concerts don't come around every other day; we should count ourselves lucky that we actually get two in one year.
