Video roundup: Select Start, Miggs, Big Cheese and Johnny Cakes
From time to time, we here at Soundcheck find our RSS feeds clogged with wonderful nuggets of news about the Tampa music scene. Other times, the nuggets are not interesting at all, and we immediately delete them and pretend they never happened. Thanks for playing, technology!
Over the last couple of weeks, though, we've stumbled across a handful of notable videos starring local musicians that we thought were worth sharing. So here, in the first of a new, occasional (and possibly one-time-only) series, we present a roundup of video news about Tampa Bay music.
First up: Big Cheese, above. We're not sure if this qualifies yet as a beef, but the big, cheesy, fun-loving rapper has gone all Weird Al on fellow Tampa rapper Plies. In response to Plies' new single Becky, Big Cheese has put together a pretty entertaining parody called Gimme Dat Bacon. It's pretty amazing that it took us this long as a society to come up with a song about how awesome bacon is, but Big Cheese pretty much nailed it on the head. ("Belly's so big I can't do Yoga / Have two sandwiches with some soda.")
Anyway, if you like meat bikinis and extreme close-ups of Oscar Mayer packaging, this video is for you. Plus, if you like the song, you can download a free mp3.
After the jump, get a new song by Select Start, an instructional video by Johnny Cakes and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypso, and footage of Miggs on Good Morning America.
Here's a video to Select Start's new single She's Everything, which will be coming to iTunes on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Like most everything else these guys do, it's catchy and crunchy and witty. It was recorded on one of the band's recent jaunts across the United States. Bonus points if you can spot the monkey bat.
Next up are darkly experimental ska kids Johnny Cakes and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypso. These guys have been on local radars since Tropical Heatwave, when they played a great gig in the Cuban Club and then followed it up with a second set that same night at New World Brewery.
This is a Yacht Rock-ish instructional video, so if you've ever wanted to know how to play the popular (and kinda dirty) Johnny Cakes song DNA, here you go. Lots of D's and A's -- and we're not talkin' chords, people. The song will be on their upcoming album, which is still in the works.
Finally, Tampa/California pop-rockers Miggs (frontman Don Miggs is married to Lisa DeBartolo, the daughter of former San Francisco 49ers owner and current Tampa real estate honcho Edward DeBartolo) were just at Skipper's Smokehouse on Sunday. Sorry we missed it. We also happened to miss their recent appearance on, of all things, Good Morning America.
But no matter! We have it here for your viewing enjoyment. Please watch their performance of the song Perfect and enjoy.
If you're a local artist who's got a new video you'd like us to check out, please shoot us an e-mail.
