Video Week: Dominique Young Unique, 'War Talk,' 'Follow The Leader'
Wunderkind Tampa rapper Dominique Young Unique keeps blowing up the blogosphere, even though she still has yet to perform a hometown show. That's okay, though, because every time she gets name-dropped by publications like BET, Spinner, LAist and the Boston Phoenix, at least they give the Cigar City a shout-out. That'll do for now.
The same goes for her clip for War Talk, from an upcoming mixtape, reportedly due in May. In it, she can be seen strutting around the streets and a basketball court in Tampa, possibly near her family's home near Temple Terrace. The clip was directed by Johannes Schaff.
It's a banger of a track, full of swagger and spitfire synths. (It's also probably NSFW.) But so far, she seems to be living up to comparisons to Nicki Minaj, Trina and Santigold. That's a good thing for the Tampa music scene. Right?
Tampa doesn't get any love in the clip for Young Unique's new video for Follow The Leader, a poppier effort featuring the rapper spitting and singing in a studio, in black and white with a few cartoony special effects, including what look like Mickey Mouse gloves -- which is appropriate, because this is the first song of hers that we could hear possibly getting played on Radio Disney. Think Rihanna with an edge.
