Wednesday on WMNF: tbt* chats with 'Latino 54' host Franco Silva
Last night I stopped by the WMNF studios to interview Latino 54 host Franco Silva for an upcoming tbt* story. But then the deejay turned the tables on me, so to speak, and invited me to chat on air about what the newspaper is up to. Silva even offered to spin a Latin record of my choice, so I grabbed an old Juanes CD out of my car. Tune into 88.5 FM Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. to hear my favorite song by the controversial Colombian star and to get a preview of next week's tbt* Weekend Edition.
Silva, 46, emcees the weekly show with co-host Yadira Caro. Between sets of Spanish music, the two discuss Latino culture and local happenings in English.
"There's a lot of people who like Latin music, but the only thing that stands in their way is that they'll listen to Spanish radio for awhile, but then when the deejay comes out talking (in Spanish), they lose it," said Silva, a Nuyorican. "They don't understand a word the dude said."
For more on Silva, including how his show got the name Latino 54, check out tbt* next Friday, Sept. 11.
