This week in CD releases: Sleepy Vikings, Mighty Mongo, Geri X. and more

Every once in a while, a week comes around in Tampa Bay where a slew of artists decide to release new albums all at once. Maybe it's something in the water. Maybe it's the pollen. Whatever it is, we're counting no fewer than seven CD release shows in the next week-plus in Tampa Bay, featuring some of the top talent Tampa Bay has to offer. Some of the highlights:

Mighty Mongo, Let's Make Serious Life Decisions: One of tbt*'s 2011 Ultimate Local Bands, Mighty Mongo will release their debut full-length in wild style on May 5, with a party titled "Cinco de Mongo." Expect DJs, a taco-eating competition, stilt-walkers, a "live Aztec art exhibition" and more starting at 5 p.m. at Vintage Ultra Lounge in St. Petersburg. Anchor Atlantic and 10th Concession are also on the bill. Click here for all the details.

Sleepy Vikings, They Will Find You Here: A reincarnation of sorts of popular Tampa indie band Giddy-up, Helicopter!, Sleepy Vikings will release one of spring's most anticipated new discs on Saturday. The South By Southwest vets scored the cover of this week's Creative Loafing and in June, they'll head out on a national tour. The CD release show is at 9 p.m. Saturday at Crowbar in Ybor City, alongside Guiltmaker and Florida Night Heat. Click here for info.

Geri X., Whiskey & Cigarettes: We've been waiting for new music from one of Tampa Bay's most popular indie singer-songwriters. Geri Micheva kills two birds with this show, which doubles as a release party for her new Whiskey & Cigarettes and a birthday bash. The album is billed as intensely stripped-down and personal -- "self produced, self recorded, amazingly evocative, sore, charming and addictive to the ear." John Wesley and Have Gun, Will Travel are also on the bill at 9 p.m. May 6 at the Local 662 in St. Petersburg. Tickets are $6-$8. Click here for details.

Between Bluffs, Mountain NearingA Dunedin trio that met at an open mic, and produce a sound that blends alt-country, folk, jazz, pop, rock, reggae and ska. It's a unique, multi-instrumental blend. You can see it for yourself at 8 p.m. Saturday at Dunedin House of Beer, in a free show. And at 6 p.m. Sunday, look for them across the bridge at the Independent in Seminole Heights. Click here for details on both shows.

Paranoia Dance Party!, Surroundings: Since 2007, Tampa's Paranoia Dance Party! has been churning out a unique blend of hardcore, ska, punk, pop and metal. For the release of their debut full-length, they're doing something special: They're performing the album in its entirety. (For a preview, click here to check out three songs.) Marksmen, Ettison and F*ck Y*eah are also on the bill at 7 p.m. Saturday at Transitions Art Gallery at the Skatepark of Tampa. Tickets are $8. Click here for details.

BAAMO's Tales of Highways and Low Roads: The Bay Area Arts and Music Organization's annual compilation of some of the region's best artists features another stellar lineup: Have Gun, Will Travel, Will Quinlan, Ronny Elliott, Experimental Pilot, the Human Condition, Alexander and the Grapes, Rebekah Pulley, Sarge and the Aeromen and more. The all-day fest starts at 5 p.m. Friday at New World Brewery in Ybor City. Click here for details.

Jeremy Gloff, This: This one is coming up just a little later, but another of tbt*'s Ultimate Local Artists, Jeremy Gloff, will release his 17th (!) album, This, with a free show May 9 at the Ybor Social Club in Ybor City. It's a Monday, but c'mon, what else do you ahve to do? This is a fun dance album, maybe Gloff's glossiest. Click here for details on the show.
