This week on Soundcheck: Meet the women of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour

For last year's Vans Warped Tour, Soundcheck decided to spotlight some of the tour's leading ladies in a feature we called The Women of Warped.

Part of the reason we did this was, quite simply, to help narrow down Warped's annual lineup. There are a whopping 75 bands listed on the bill for this year's Warped Tour stop in St. Petersburg, which returns Friday to Vinoy Waterfront Park. For most fans, most of the bands are are unknown quantities. Sure, you know the headliners -- Andrew W.K., Sum 41, Reel Big Fish -- but do you know anything about, say, Gardening, Not Architecture? Didn't think so.

So focusing on Warped's female acts definitely helped us narrow down which artists to watch, because you truly can't see them all. But beyond that, these grrrls just flat-out rock.

In years past, the Warped Tour has featured artists like No Doubt, Paramore, Joan JettKaty Perry and other big-name female artists. Last year, thanks to our Women of Warped series, we became acquainted with sister act Meg & Dia, singer-songwriter Alana Grace, Singer Maria Brink of metalheads In This Moment, Redington Shores resident Sierra Kusterbeck of pop-punks VersaEmerge, trash-pop hellraisers The Millionaires, and Canadian pop artist Lights, above, who quickly became Soundcheck's official rock-star crush.

So this year, we're doing it again. There are a handful of ass-kicking chicks coming to St. Pete this week for the Warped Tour, and we want to introduce you to them. We think we may have even found a new rock-star crush to replace Lights. (Well, not "replace" ... no one could ever replace our dear Lights. But check back tomorrow to meet an artist we think could be this year's Lights-like indie-pop breakout star.)

Stand by for the first entry in The Women of Warped 2010 in just a few minutes ...
