This week in Tampa: A-Trak, Rick Ross, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and more
There'll be lots of patriotic music no matter where you turn this weekend. For something a little different, though, you've got A-Trak, above, and Rick Ross, both ready to drop some block-rockin' beats in Ybor City on Sunday night.
In this week's concert picks, Carole Giambalvo tosses out a few more options, including the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Starlight Mints, Amanda Overmyer, Beres Hammond and more.
Get the rundown after the jump...
With the Evangelicals, the Tape Delay
FRIDAY 9 p.m. New World Brewery, 1313 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City. $8. (813) 248-4969.
Somewhere along the line, an unlikely Norman, Okla. became a hotbed of orchestral indie rock and psychedelic pop. Like fellow Sooner State band the Flaming Lips, the Starlight Mints (very refreshing) and the Evangelicals captivate listeners with multifaceted, lose-yourself pop songs. “Put jelly on my toast so the mice don’t bite / floating down this river in a cello,” sing the Mints. Yeah, we don’t know what that means either, but it’s fun developing your own theories, no? And the Evangelicals’ concert T-shirt is a heck of a conversation piece: It reads, “Evangelicals are strange.”
Rock ’n Wings Concert
Featuring Amanda Overmyer, the Greg Billings Band, Liz Hollister, Drew Street Mary
SATURDAY 4 p.m. Albert Whitted Airport,107 Eighth Ave. SE, St. Petersburg. $10. (727) 893-7654.
With a croaky growl and skunky do, American Idol finalist Amanda Overmyer shows love for both Janis Joplin and Lily Munster. Curt but genuine, the Harley-ridin’ “rock 'n roll nurse” from Idol’s seventh season will perform bluesy Southern rock originals off new disc Solidify and most likely, cover a few Credence Clearwater Revival and Joplin tunes like she did on the show.
With Rye Rye, Treasure Fingers, Pauly Crush, DJ Mega, Stavros, more
SUNDAY 4 p.m. Crowbar, 1812 17th St. N, Ybor City. $10-$12. (813) 241-8600.
When he was 13, Brooklyn-based DJ A-Trak says he took his bar mitzvah money and put it towards turntables and a mixer. Now at 27, he‚Äôs ‚Äúlike buttah,‚Äù shuffling seamlessly through bass-heavy house, hip-hop, pop and electro. A former DMC World DJ Champion and the brother of ‚Äúthe mustachioed half of Chromeo,‚Äù A-Trak earned the slot as Kanye West‚Äôs official tour DJ. Not bad for a guy ‚Äúwho looks like he couldn‚Äôt even make it out of the bathroom at a hip-hop show,‚Äù as Ice-T once quipped. M.I.A. prot?©g?© and hot stepper Rye Rye also performs.
The Fabulous Thunderbirds
SUNDAY 8 p.m. Floyd’s at Seminole Hard Rock and Casino, 5223 Orient Road, Tampa. $25. (813) 627-7761.
The Fabulous Thunderbirds’ muscly electric blues earned them opening slots for the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. And Tuff Enuff and Wrap It Up achieved moderate commercial success in the '80s, helping to bring the Texas blues scene to the forefront. Co-founder Kim Wilson remains the only original member, as the Thunderbirds’ guitarist Jimmie Vaughn (brother of Stevie Ray Vaughn) went on to pursue a solo career.
Bourbon Street Anniversary Celebration
FRIDAY 3 p.m. Bourbon Street Nightclub, 4331 US Hwy. 19, New Port Richey. Free. ($12 after 7 p.m.) (727) 843-0686.
Featuring Pitbull Toddler, the Greg Billings Band, Live After Death (Iron Maiden tribute), Rage to Order (Queensryche tribute), Voodoo (Dio tribute)
Bourbon Street, New Port Richey’s roomy, balls-out hard rock club, celebrates 11 years in business. Cowhead of 102.5 the Bone will broadcast live and play bass with his band Pitbull Toddler. By the way, Pearl Jam and STP are apparently now in the Bone’s “classic rock” category. Wheel me into the home now, why don’t ya?
SATURDAY 9 p.m. The Ritz, 1503 Seventh Ave., Ybor City. $35. (813) 247-2555.
The Marvin Gaye of Jamaica, smoky-voiced Beres Hammond, returns with a seductive blend of reggae and R&B. Growing up on Sam Cooke and Peter Tosh, Hammond sought to combine the styles of the two. Early '90s hit Tempted to Touch earned him some recognition in the U.S., but the leather-capped crooner is “one of the most underappreciated reggae artists of his time,” says All Music Guide. Just don’t disrespect his “no disturb sign” after the show.
Hot Dog Show 3
Featuring Sunbears!, Juicy Pony, the Grecian Urns, eFFeX, DJ Mini Horse
FRIDAY 9 p.m. Crowbar, 1812 17th St. N, Ybor City. $5. (813) 241-8600.
Sometimes big and exultant like Muse, sometimes happy-go-lucky like Mates of State, Jacksonville’s Sunbears! are deserving of their exclamation point. Like friends and former tourmates the Black Kids, everything they do, they do with oomph. Plus they’ve got a mean cover of Michael Jackson's Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough. St. Pete family folk act Grecian Urns and mind-boggling lip-smacker/beatboxer eFFeX open the show. Put your gullet to the test in the hot dog eating contest. Since Kobayashi’s in Coney Island for the weekend, we’re saying there’s a chance.
The Hold Steady
THURSDAY (JULY 2) 8 p.m. The Ritz, 1503 Seventh Ave., Ybor City. Free. (813) 247-2555.
Just in time for the Fourth, the Hold Steady plays its rescheduled show tonight in Ybor. Odes to the blue collar man and Craig Finn’s clumsy dance steps (I’ve heard comparisons to Robin Williams) are just a few reasons the Hold Steady’s stuff is all-American. In fact, we’re pretty certain that if Lincoln had an iPod, these guys would have been on it. The band has a fascination with Ybor City too (Killer Parties, Slapped Actress, Most People are DJs) — maybe that’s why we’re getting a free show. That, or it’s the fact that Jim Beam’s footing the bill. Previously issued tickets will be honored, but the concert is now at capacity. Get more info at ruxton.com/beamrocksflorida.
SUNDAY 10 p.m. Temple Mega Lounge, 1915 E. Seventh Ave., Ybor City. Ticket price TBD. (813) 248-8675.
Neither the disclosure of Rick Ross’ corrections officer past nor his beef with 50 Cent seem to have slowed the roll of South Florida’s teflon don. “The Boss,” who says the real Miami isn’t South Beach, has based much of his lyrical content on his drug-slinging days in and around Carol City. Latest Deeper than Rap, however, which includes R&B flavored Magnificent with John Legend, strays from that a bit by focusing on luxuries Ross now enjoys -- i.e. marble flooring, delicate fabrics and low-mileage corvettes.
