Well, that was quick: Antisocial @ the Social is no more

Seems like only yesterday we were extolling the virtues of Antisocial @ the Social, a happening new Monday-night open mic at one of Ybor City's coolest new gay clubs.

Good thing we caught it when we did. Because the owners of the Social are putting the kibosh on Antisocial.

"Mondays, it wasn't enough business for me to have a manager come in, and I just didn't want to do it myself," said owner Steve Donahue, who also owns G.Bar, the Honey Pot and the Eagle leather bar, located below the Social. "Some weeks it would be packed, and some weeks it wasn't busy at all."

Donahue also said he thought the event needed more oversight, to ensure people weren't drinking for free. Antisocial will be replaced on Mondays by a lesbian night called Singles and Socialites, featuring amateur strip contests.

Jeremy Gloff, Peter Botti and DJ Leah Q. (Connelly) started Antisocial as something of a continuation of Gloff and Botti's old open-mic night at Sacred Grounds in Tampa. Since April, they've drawn crowds of up to 170 for everything from folk to cabaret to metal to Peter Pan.

"I'm a little bummed out," said Gloff, above, who has already registered some of his frustrations on his Twitter feed. "We picked the slowest night of the week, and I really thought we were doing something good."

Gloff said the concept never really got as much publicity as it needed to succeed. But Donahue said he'd be willing to have Antisocial come back on a night when he could be there to oversee it. "I'm willing to do it on Tuesdays; that's pretty much the only night we have open," he said.

Gloff, for his part, said he'd had his fill of open mic nights for a while, and wasn't looking to continue Antisocial elsewhere.
