The Whispers cancel St. Pete Times Forum concert

If it seemed odd to you that The Whispers, a classic R&B/soul vocal group from the '60s, were headlining Tampa's St. Pete Times Forum in August, you're probably not alone.

It makes sense when you consider that the concert is taking place at the same time as the national convention of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine -- kind of an African-American version of the Shriners -- at the Tampa Convention Center. But still, you wonder how well this concert was going to do. Nothing against the Whispers, who scored nearly a dozen Top 10 R&B singles over a 40-year career, but this wasn't a show with massive mainstream appeal.

As it turns out, we'll never know how it would have done. The Whispers and opening act K'Jon have canceled their Aug. 15 concert at the Forum, according to a brief announcement by the Forum. No explanation was given. Tickets can be refunded at the point of purchase.
