Who's the biggest concert draw in Tampa Bay music?

Not.tonight.josephine33
We could go on and on and on about who is the BEST band in Tampa Bay. This post isn't about that.

This post is about a different issue: Who's the biggest DRAW in Tampa Bay music? Who's the most COMMERCIALLY POPULAR live band?

For example: Not Tonight Josephine, above, has a show Saturday night at the State Theatre with Drew Street Mary, Zanesville, New Violation and Hydrosonic. That's a pretty solid lineup -- both Not Tonight Josephine and Drew Street Mary were Creative Loafing Best of the Bay winners in 2009 (NTJ as "Most Promising Rock Band," and DSM as "Best Band Likely to Steal Your Teenage Daughter’s Heart").

Headlining a weekend show at the State is a pretty decent deal for a local band. Set It Off has done it, and Oceana is playing there on Jan. 22. Select Start could probably do it, if they haven't already. Not Tonight Josephine and Hydrosonic are also playing a show at the House of Blues in Orlando on Jan. 30.

The common thread among those bands is that they all play a style of modern rock/punk/emo that doesn't always get the same critical attention from the press as beloved hipstery indie artists that might only sell a few dozen tickets. Not Tonight Josephine guitarist Jake Moore says about 300 tickets have been sold for Saturday's concert, which is nothing to sneeze at.

We're not promoters, and we don't book a lot of live shows, so we'll throw the question over to you guys. Putting aside "national local" bands like Obituary or the Genitorturers, which Tampa Bay bands are the biggest concert draws? Who gets the largest crowds on the most consistent basis?

Let us know what you think in the comments.

50 Concerts

50rockWhy would anyone voluntarily attempt to see 50 concerts at 50 different venues in a single summer? Jay Cridlin shrugged and thought: Eh, why not.
