Everclear, Live, Filter, Sponge coming to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg
You know how we love the '90s, right? So you can imagine our dismay when it was announced that Sugar Ray's Under the Sun Tour -- featuring Smash Mouth, Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon and Fastball -- would not be coming to Tampa Bay this summer. (Not yet, anyway -- they still have plenty of "TBA" dates surrounding an Aug. 10 date in "Atlanta, FL." WTF?)
We were likewise dismayed that the Barenaked Ladies' Last Summer on Earth Tour, with Ben Folds Five and Guster, was not coming to Florida. It was starting to look like we'd have to make do with the Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty at the Live Nation Amphitheatre on Aug. 4.
But today it's been announced that yet another '90s package tour is coming to Tampa Bay: The 2013 Summerland Tour, with Everclear, Live, Filter and Sponge, on May 30 at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg.
Now, mind you, these are not necessarily the same bands you remember from the radio in 1996. As Rolling Stone points out, from a classic-lineup standpoint, Everclear, Filter and Sponge are down to just their frontmen (Art Alexakis, Richard Patrick and Vinny Dombroski, respectively), while Live is touring WITHOUT frontman Ed Kowalczyk. You will not find greater supporters of mid-'90s radio rock than us here at SoundcheckCorp., but even we have some serious doubts about this bill. It's no Kings of the Mic Tour, that's for sure.
Tickets will cost $39-$69 and go onsale at noon Friday. Click here for details.
