UPDATE: Hootie and the Blowfish coming to St. Petersburg for beer launch party, concert at Mahaffey Theater

Lately, you may have noticed a new brew in the local aisle in your neighborhood grocery or craft beer store: Hootie's Homegrown Ale, a blonde ale created for Hootie and the Blowfish by South Carolina's Palmetto Brewing Company with an assist from Tampa's Cigar City Brewing.

It's the latest release from Rock Brothers Brewing, a Tampa company that has created band-specific brews for artists like 311, Umphrey's McGee and Rebelution. After months of being available only in South Carolina, it's finally hitting stores in Florida and Georgia. And Hootie and the Blowfish are coming to St. Petersburg to celebrate.

Country star Darius Rucker will get his old band back together for a Hootie's Homegrown Ale release party and concert at the Mahaffey Theater on Sept. 17, Rock Brothers announced this week.

***UPDATE*** The concert has been moved up by one day, from Sept. 17 to Sept. 16. Click here for details.

While the '90s hitmakers never exactly broke up, this is still a one-off deal -- it's not part of a tour, and tickets will only be handed out via contest through the brewery. The contest is open only to those 21 and up and runs through Sept. 5. Tickets will be distributed at will call on the day of the show. Click here for all the details.

As for Hootie's Homegrown Ale, you'll be able to pick it up at a number of outlets, including Publix, Total Wine and More, ABC Fine Wine and Spirits, Whole Foods, the Fresh Market, the Brass Tap and World of Beer.

One place you won't be able to get it: Blowfish Bar and Grill, a restaurant opened by Hootie and the Blowfish bassist Dean Felber in the Tyrone area of St. Pete a few years ago. That place closed a while back. Too bad, because that would be a perfect place for an afterparty.
