Mindy McCready suicide: Tampa Bay fans saw singer's struggles up close

Associated Press

One cannot necessarily trace the suicide of country singer Mindy McCready to her time in Tampa Bay. But there is no doubt this area was home to one of her lowest lows.

In 2005, the oft-troubled McCready was found unconscious in an Indian Rocks Beach Holiday Inn, unresponsive due to an overdose of drugs and alcohol. Police called it a suicide attempt. It would not be her last — nor would it be her final run-in with the law in Florida. In 2011, the Fort Myers native drew the ire of the Florida Department of Children and Families by taking her son, Zander, from Florida, where he lived with McCready’s mother, his legal custodian. Just this month, Zander’s father, Billy McKnight — a country artist in his own right — pleaded his case that the boy, now 6, be returned to live with him in Tampa.

It’s all a long, long way from McCready’s days at the top of the charts with hits like Guys Do It All The Time. But here in Tampa Bay, it’s tough to say we never saw it coming.
