Parks and rock: How Curtis Hixon, Vinoy and Coachman parks vie for music festivals

This weekend two of Tampa Bay's three signature parks will host music festivals.

The Gasparilla Music Festival will draw thousands of fans to downtown Tampa's Curtis Hixon Park, above, on Saturday. That same day, thousands more will head to Clearwater's Coachman Park for Wild Splash. And next month, the biggest park of the three, Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg, will host the Tampa Bay Blues Festival.

Luring major festivals to each park is a challenge for city events and parks and recreation officials. Sometimes the venue fits the needs of one festival but not another -- such as Funk Fest, which struggled through several years at Vinoy Park before deciding, this year, to move to Curtis Hixon Park in May.
