Photos: JJ Grey goes solo at release party for locally brewed Nare Sugar Brown ale at MacDinton's in St. Petersburg
Jacksonville’s JJ Grey and Mofro have a packed show at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg Friday night – and with good reason.
It was the release day for Nare Sugar Brown, a Grey-themed brown ale created by St. Petersburg’s Rock Brothers Brewing and Green Bench Brewing and Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing.
Before the show, Grey popped into MacDinton’s St. Pete for a VIPs-only beer release party (among those in the crowd was O.A.R. keyboardist Mikel Paris), where he growled and strummed through a three song acoustic set: Hide & Seek, Floribama and Florida.
Nare Sugar Brown – Rock Brothers’ second band-themed beer this year, following Have Gun, Will Travel’s High Road Ale in April – is sweet but nutty, a good fall beer. Co-owner Kevin Lilly says they’re already talking to several bands about the next collaboration, all of them out of state (he mentioned the Carolinas and Colorado as potential destinations).
If you’ve got a hankering for Nare Sugar Brown, it’s now officially on tap at Green Bench Brewing in St. Pete, and you’ll soon be able to find it at several other bars around town. Lilly said Rock Brothers is prepared for six months’ worth of production, though they hope they’ll be able to brew it indefinitely, like High Road Ale.
