UPDATE: Morrissey coming to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg
Here's a fun fact -- well, inasmuch as any fact involving the Smiths can be considered "fun": Back in 1986, the Smiths played their last-ever U.S. show at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg.
Twenty-eight years later, the group's moody and mercurial frontman, Morrissey, will return to that very site.
According to several reports, Morrissey has unveiled plans for a spring U.S. tour that on May 30 will arrive at St. Petersburg's Mahaffey Theater, which was part of the Bayfront Center complex before the arena was demolished in 2004.
The news was first leaked to the well-connected Morrissey fan site True To You, but has since been confirmed by Billboard, which notes than an official announcement is expected -- when else? -- on Valentine's Day. According to True To You, tour tickets could go on sale Feb. 21, with Kirsteen Young opening. There's no word on tickets, but we'll update you if that changes.
***UPDATE*** According to the Mahaffey Theater, tickets are $55-$89.50 and they'll go on sale at noon Feb. 21. Click here for details.
Now comes the part where we remind you that Morrissey has been somewhat, shall we say, unreliable when it comes to making good on promised tour dates. Heck, he was supposed to perform at Jannus Landing in St. Petersburg in 2009 before pulling the plug at the last minute.
Heaven knows Smiths fans aren't exactly known for their optimism, but we're hoping beyond hope that this tour actually comes to pass. Please, please, please, let us get what we want.
