Review: Kanye West brings 'Yeezus' to chaotic life at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa
Kanye West has sold out recent gigs in New York's Madison Square Garden, but drew a throng of just 7,408 on Saturday at the Tampa Bay Times in Florida.
Whether that low figure has more to do with Kanye's ego or his deliberately off-putting new album Yeezus is now up for debate -- though from where we were sitting in the cheap seats, the Church of Kanye seemed to be in full session, with fans rapping every word to Yeezus.
Sean Daly was there, and he writes:
He screamed at his sound people; he barked at the audience. But just try looking away: The local crowd would sing along one minute, collectively hold its breath the next, worried the star would storm off (or perilously writhe off) the stage for good....
And yet cuts such as the ferocious Power and the arena-rocking Black Skinhead were spellbinding, provocative Kanye questioning not just his own grip on fame but those people trying to loosen that grip, threatened by his money or his skin color. He is nothing if not honest, and you'd be wrong to mistake truth-telling for derangement.
