Review: Kings of the Mic Tour brings LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, De La Soul to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg
When Public Enemy launched into Can't Truss It on Thursday at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Sean Daly, who was in the crowd of more than 2,000, called it "quite possibly the most insane jam the Mahaffey has hosted."
Actually, you could say that about the entire set. PE, LL Cool J, Ice Cube and De La Soul combined for a three-hour hip-hop history lesson, with some of the biggest and baddest rap hits of the '80s and '90s.
All four acts had their moments in the spotlight, but LL was the headliner, and as Sean writes:
Let it be known the man responsible for Mama Said Knock You Out and Going Back to Cali is still a pugilistic MC. Backed by DJ Z-Trip, LL made sure his vocal was high and mighty during his hit-packed set. For all his Hollywood trappings these days, his performance was in-your-face and unfettered, including a haymaker version of I'm Bad. Call me crazy, but LL and Cube and PE sell their boasts better as middle-aged survivors.
